With spring finally in the air, the plant life thriving, and lots of April showers, I began to think about how important water is to everything form plants and animals to even us human beings. Without water there would be nothing!
As the weather is getting warmer, and we begin to sweat more, water intake is more important than ever. Most of us have heard that we need to consume at least 6 glasses of water a day, although they say that 8 glasses are better. However, I do not know how many of you have tried to get 6-8 glasses of water down in a day, but it is difficult. There is good news. Hooray! The good news is that, you do not necessarily have to drink 8 glasses of water a day because as long as you consume food, you are getting an adequate supply of water. Everything we consume, from fruits and vegetables to bread, all contain water that eventually adds up to allow us to meet our daily water requirement. Did you know that a slice of whole wheat bread has more than 30% water in it? Therefore in a typical breakfast of 2 slices of whole wheat toast, with butter or jam, you are getting more than 60% water! Fruits and vegetables alone give you more than 80%! Based on this simple fact, it looks like there is no need to worry about meeting your water intake after all.
The bottom line is this: If you consume a healthy diet paying attention to meeting the requirements from each of the food groups, getting the recommended amount of water per day is as simple as eating a meal…with a glass of water of course!
