Trying to distinguish oneself from the myriad of bands and musicians, is always a difficult feat. More so today, than in the past where any band with computer access is capable of putting their material online. But every now and then comes a band that is capable of emerging from the masses, distinguishing themselves with their innovative music and undisputable talent. SpiderBaby is the answer to anyone who’s been waiting for an eletro-punk band to arise. Its members, Shannon Lee, Imogen Commander, and Nathan James, put the glitter in punk leaving you with the feeling of wanting to party rather than depress you with sappy ballads as latest bands to come out of the U.K. seem to have done. With songs like Teenage Odyssey and Love Buzz SpiderBaby are more intent to bring you up rather than bringing you down. Band member Shannon Lee discusses what makes Spider Baby different from the other bands in the recent music scene.
When did Spider Baby begin and how did the members meet?
“SpiderBaby in itself began in February 2006. Nathan and myself had played together in a previous band (cult favourites BUBBLEGUM SUPERSTAR), and after spending some time on various other projects, we came back together with a renewed passion to create the most exciting band in the world SpiderBaby! Imogen was a playwright seeking a new outlet for her creative talents and fell in love with our ideas for both the sound and image of the band and we all clicked straight away.”
What makes Spider Baby different from the other bands out right now?
“You only have to see and hear us to realise how different we are. I haven’t heard any band like us and a lot of our fans from all over the world have reinforced that self-same opinion. If I wasn’t a member, I would certainly be a fan and create a band like it!”
If you could tour with any band, which would it be?
“We have lots of people we’d love to share a bill with. On a personal note, and not to dissimilar musically to us, it would, for me, be Rachel Stamp and Pink Grease. We would also certainly thrive on being on a bill with someone like Placebo.”
Do you think that the internet has made it easier for bands to get noticed?
“Absolutely! We’ve already got fans all over the world who, without the internet, wouldn’t have had the chance to hear our music and we’re really thankful for that. It’s amazing how music can travel across languages and still mean something to people. From Israel to Mexico and Japan where the songs, even though not sung in the native language, have a profound effect. It’s really touching and we salute them all.”
Do you think that a good music video is sometimes better than having a good song, or do you think that ultimately it’s a combination of both to help a band gain recognition?
“It has to be a combination of both. I’d like to think our upcoming video for Love Buzz fits fantastically with the song as it’s hyper and alive! Sometimes a bad song can be improved with a good video but a good song is a good song regardless.”
What are your future projects?
“First and foremost it’s getting the single out on 18 September and as much coverage for it as possible. Then we intend to hit the road and are looking to take it anywhere and everywhere! We promise you the greatest rock and roll show you’ve ever seen; there will be excitement, sex, and romance. It will be a trip and we hope you can join us for the ride.”
